Welcome to the Republic of Texas, a country mined from the rubble of a fallen America and forged into steel by civil war and unending corporate conflict. Technology and neglect made this country what it is. It's near as wild as it was after America wrestled it from the native civilizations. Maybe more so. It's a tough place to make a living, but it's home and on a good day it’s a bounty hunter's gold mine.
Winston Brand was a bounty hunter, but nothing felt like a gold mine when he woke after a battle he didn’t remember. By the looks of it, it wasn’t a battle he’d won. All he knew was that Goodwin was paying good money to find a girl. There were other hunters after the girl, too, so Winston hardly had time to ask himself the question
Why does Chester Goodwin want his own daughter back "dead or alive"?
Grit and Grace A Metal and Men Novella Metal and Men Series Book 1 eBook Anthony Eichenlaub
I read Anthony Eichenlaub's full-length novel, Justice in an Age of Metal and Men last year, and was eager to devour this second installment. The thing I enjoy most about this short story/novella is how Eichenlaub captures a dirty, gritty environment while maintaining a futuristic society reminiscent of Joss Whedon's Firefly. We get hints right away that all is not as it seems with this particular bounty hunter, and I enjoy how the author slowly reveals clues until we get to the surprising (and satisfying) ending.
I'd recommend this to any fan of Firefly. You'll find the same wit and bravado set in a gritty, realistic future. Enjoy!

Grit and Grace A Metal and Men Novella Metal and Men Series Book 1 eBook Anthony Eichenlaub Reviews
I *really* liked this novella, as it was right in my wheelhouse! Loving sci-fi tv shows/movies like the franchise 'Firefly', this certainly whetted my appetite. I'm also a fan of some cyberpunk novels like "Headcrash" and "Snowcrash", so this was a bit less far-fetched and more tangible entry approaching that genre.
I can't wait for the next installment!
Set in a dystopian future, Grit and Grace is a novella with everything you'd want in a story a hero (a bit shop-worn), a heroine (plucky and smart), villains (mean S.O.B.'s) and enough technology to last a lifetime.
The tale takes us to an America, Texas--to be precise--that is somewhat changed from what we know. It's a world in which libraries are history, cars float, and technology is paramount. In fact, technology has replaced, just about, everything that makes us human. Memories can be uploaded, pain can be dimmed, and brains are enhanced, as are eyes.
Bounty Hunter Winston Brand is hunting an 11-year-old girl, Lena Goodwin. His handler, (she uploads information, etc. to his brain, and keeps him on track, sort of like a super-charged Personal Assistant) Hetty, wants a vacation, and if Winston can find the girl, dead or alive, they will be very well-paid. But nothing is easy, and Winston finds the kid to be elusive and the competition for the bounty fierce.
I wholehearted recommend this! It's well-written, it's clever, it's entertaining, it's even heart-warming!
This is a great little story written in the tradition of Stephen King's Gunslinger series. It is set in a world where human flesh, bionics, computer systems and plant organics merge in the human body and blur the lines between normal and fantastical. This is 'cyberpunk,' a genre that combines classical heroics and villainy with futuristic technology to create stories that are very human and emotion oriented. Eichenlaub well captures the emo of science fiction. The size is just right for a cover to cover read.
This is more of a short story that a novella.
This is based in the world that his other book is set in. This book follows a bounty hunter on a job. Only the quarry is a little girl, and he has lost his memories - and something seems strange about the job.
This is a well written story. My only real criticism is that he doesn't provide quite enough internal dialog during the action scenes to understand the intention of the MC, and sometimes it's needed to understand the scene.
