Mexican Hat Trick The Blackfox Chronicles TS O'Neil Suzanne O'Neil Books

Wow, talk about a roller coaster ride...from Florida (on a nicely restored wooden cabin cruiser) to the dens of some Mexican cartel bosses, the book is pretty much non-stop action. Excellent choice of and descriptions of weapons, which is nice if you like guns, as I do. New soup recipe too, but not one I'd advise preparing for your family...

Nicely drawn characters and a plot that will keep you guessing. Good to know the author has a few more in this series...makes it easy to plan my fall reading.

Oh my goodness this is what used to be referred to as a ripping yarn (hey, I’m a Limey). I was swept away by the action-packed story which at times was so fast-paced I had to engage the hand-brake and serve myself a calming drop of The Macallan itself, mentioned only once (but honourably) in the long list of beverages consumed by the heroes and villains of T. S. O’Neil’s book, who are more into tequila and beer than the Scottish product.
So, the plot in the beginning it was supposed to be (as we say in French) ‘a finger in ze nose’ job, that’s to say a pretty routine assignment for Eddie Doyle (love that character), he of the eidetic memory, police detective turned P.I. He is tasked by multi-millionaire businessman Malcolm O’Bannon with going to Mexico to investigate what appears to be a garment counterfeiting scam. Helping him is Michael Blackfox, whose helpfulness resides in his ‘unique brand of skills’ i.e. blowing people up, plus a cast of other memorable characters who we get to know through crisp vignettes where description mixes with snappy dialogue.
As in many good yarns, things are not necessarily the way they seem and people not who they are supposed to be, which is how our good guys quickly find themselves fighting for their lives in the middle of a hail of bullets from AK-47s and M16s and asking themselves ‘why a counterfeit clothing raid results in an ambush that killed more cops than jelly donuts’.
There’s a lot of cinematic writing in ‘Mexican Hat Trick’. With a flourish of his pen the author transports us south of the border to a variety of scenes. There are the depressing dives
‘The place had a dirty cement floor that appeared to have never been cleaned. A world-weary bar made of cracked vinyl-topped plywood ran the length of one wall. The bartender looked like he had served the first shot and never left. A Fifties era jukebox sat in the corner belting out a Mexican song from the same period. Three bored-looking prostitutes sat at two tables towards the back of the bar. One was missing a hand.’
There are the mountain episodes where ‘the horses…snorted in the effort as they climbed the precipitous trail, exhaling small puffs of visible vapour in the cool mountain air. The fog of low-lying clouds shrouded the trail at various intervals. The high rainforest was alive with the sounds of birds and frogs, while the riders remained eerily quiet.’
It’s like being plunged into an edgy Western where all you need is a snarling mountain cat to jump out and attack the riders–wait, what’s that deep-throated roar…?
As would be expected, given T.S. O’Neil’s background, the technical bits are totally convincing and, even for someone like myself, more of a Dolce and Gabbana than a Heckler and Kock, succeed in grabbing your attention. As Eddie, Michael and crew play a deadly cat and mouse game with some seriously nasty baddies, the reader is caught up in numerous edge-of-the-seat scenes such as the one inside a Gulfstream plunging from the skies with an engine on fire (you’ll have to read the book to find out how that one ends).
Just one minor quibble. I think the book would benefit from another edit. It was a bit distracting when Michael became Micheal, Aguilar became Agular, shoes had ‘souls’, and characters had ‘have closed’ eyes. (‘Spellcheck’ strikes again??)
Mexican Hat Trick was ‘easy reading’ in the best of senses, a narrative which was compelling with no superfluous fat, characters painted with boldly-coloured brush strokes, great atmosphere and plenty of laughs. There are some books you engage in from page 1, this was one of those for me. I’ll be checking out the other books in the series.
--3.5 Stars--

This book is full of action, excitement, mystery, and adventure.

This book has drug cartels, kingpins, murderers, and lots of criminal activity! This book takes you on a wild and crazy trip that will certainly entertain you!

Eddie Doyle, a Private Investigator, who is also a Retired Sheriff's Department Detective, is sent to Mexico to investigate a counterfeit clothing scam. He takes his partner, Michael Blackfox, who is a Former Force Recon Marine with him to inspect the facility and solve the case.

Eddie and Michael make a brilliant team! They sure seem to get into some hairy situations, but with the two of them on the case they will do everything they can to crack it and make it back safely.

Eddie has an eidetic memory. I’ve always been fascinated by people with this unique talent. It definitely added an extra dimension to this book. Both Eddie and Michael bring a special skill set that makes them exceptional at solving cases together.

These characters are well developed, likable, and realistic.

The story line is strong and holds up well. Mr. O’Neil proves his military and criminal justice background as he conveys reasonable and practical scenes, plots, and characters.

I didn’t know much of the counterfeit clothing operation, but this book provided detailed insight that made the illegal activity comprehensible. Many people, including myself, most likely think it’s just the company or consumer that gets ripped off. Nope! There’s way more to it than that and it funnels all the way down to the economic standpoint.

There were a lot more gory scenes and details than I expected. I kind of just skimmed over it. It didn’t bother me, just was a little more than I’m used to reading. Guys – you’ll probably love it lol!

This book has tremendous detail. Whether O’Neil was describing the Mexico background or the one-handed prostitute or the AK-47 – it’s all easy to picture.

Although this book is targeted at 12-18 year-olds in grades 7-12, this book can still be enjoyed by an older crowd. I’m in my late 20’s and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Although this is Book Four in the series it easily holds up on its own. I have not read the first three books, but I was still able to understand and follow the story. I think reading the first three books would be nice to get a better understanding of the main characters, and there were some “inside” jokes and references that probably would have been more recognizable. However, it is not required to read them first.

The story line and characters are good – maybe even great. Unfortunately, there are many spelling and grammar errors in the book. This is quite distracting and disappointing. Especially since this book is targeted at young adults. They are significantly learning at this age and don’t need to be taught writing mistakes. I had to take half a star off for this.

Yes, I would recommend this book as it was an exciting and interesting read. However, I strongly suggest Mr. O’Neil has at least one more edit to his book. I would have proudly given this book four stars. However, with the errors, I can only give this book 3.5 stars.
